To celebrate the launch of Joe Lycett's new four-part Sky Original series Joe Lycett's United States of Birmingham, Sky has announced an exciting one-day experiment that will unite Brummies from across the globe. On 22nd April, a special portal, known as The Brum Hole, will be set up in Victoria Square, Birmingham, UK. This live connection will allow members of the public to meet and make friends with someone from one of the 18 other Birminghams around the world.
In Joe Lycett's United States of Birmingham, the comedian sets out on a mission to put the city of Birmingham firmly back on the map – not just locally, but internationally. His quest takes him to North America, where he explores the history and culture of the Birminghams scattered across the continent, forging "Friendship Agreements" with as many of these places as he can. While Joe will not be present at The Brum Hole event, Sky has taken on the challenge of continuing this mission by providing the public with an opportunity to join the growing United States of Birmingham.
The Brum Hole is inspired by previous portal experiments in the worlds of art and science, which have connected cities worldwide. On 22nd April, anyone with a chance to participate will be able to chat with a potential friend from a far-off Birmingham, creating new bonds and building a global Brummie network. Successful applicants will be selected based on their enthusiasm, sense of humour, and willingness to embrace the quirky and fun spirit of the event. Participants will also receive an exclusive Joe Lycett's United States of Birmingham friendship bracelet as a memento of their diplomatic efforts.
To apply for a chance to secure a slot at The Brum Hole, simply email BrumHole@multitudemedia.co.uk with details about what you would do if selected. Whether you want to compare dialects, sing a song, or simply have a friendly chat, Sky is eager to hear your ideas. The event will be filmed, and all successful applicants should be available to attend their time slot on 22nd April.
Joe Lycett expressed his excitement about the event, even though he won't be able to attend due to another commitment. "I'm delighted Sky are producing this unique opportunity to speak with other Brummies around the world. In my experience, they are kind, charming, and interesting folk, unless they're called 'Alison Hammond'," he quipped. "I was not responsible for the title Brum Hole and do not enjoy saying things like 'have a look in my Brum Hole'."
Applications for The Brum Hole will close on 14th April, so if you want to take part, don't wait too long to apply. Successful applicants will receive their time slots ahead of the event, and slots will last around 15 minutes. Whether you're hoping to find a long-lost relative in another Birmingham, compare Balti recipes, or just have a fun chat, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
The Brum Hole will land in Victoria Square, Birmingham, on 22nd April. Joe Lycett's United States of Birmingham will be available from the same day on Sky Max and NOW.
