EastEnders is teaming up with Comic Relief this Red Nose Day to bring viewers a powerful five-minute special focusing on Phil Mitchell's mental health and the importance of seeking help.

Phil, played by Steve McFadden, has been at the centre of a major mental health storyline in recent months, reaching a crisis point during EastEnders' 40th anniversary when his depression and symptoms of psychosis led him to attempt to take his own life. Now, as he continues his treatment in a mental health unit, he forms a bond with fellow patient Andy, played by Jake Rory. Andy opens up about his time at a homeless youth hostel, and the two men soon realise they share more than they first thought.

To ensure the storyline is handled with sensitivity and accuracy, EastEnders and Comic Relief have worked closely with the Brandon Centre, a charity funded by Comic Relief that provides essential mental health support for young people.

The special episode will air as part of Comic Relief: Funny For Money on Friday 21 March, celebrating 40 years of Comic Relief's fundraising efforts. It will follow a previously announced special EastEnders episode airing on Thursday 20 March at 7:30pm on BBC One and 6am on BBC iPlayer, which will explore Phil's time in the mental health unit in greater depth.

Comic Relief CEO Samir Patel expressed his gratitude for the collaboration, highlighting the charity's commitment to tackling homelessness and the mental health crisis. He emphasised that support from the public this Red Nose Day could make a real difference in ensuring vital services are available to those in need.

Brandon Centre CEO Julia Brown also praised the partnership, explaining how Comic Relief's support has allowed them to provide therapy directly to homeless young people in hostels at critical moments in their lives. She described the EastEnders storyline as a significant step in raising awareness of the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness and mental health struggles.

EastEnders Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw spoke about the importance of the storyline, stating that working with Comic Relief and the Brandon Centre has been invaluable in portraying Phil's journey with authenticity. He noted that Phil and Andy's unexpected connection adds a compelling layer to the story, highlighting the shared experiences of those struggling with mental health issues.

With its history of tackling difficult subjects, EastEnders continues to shine a light on real-life issues, and this special collaboration with Comic Relief is set to be a moving and meaningful addition to this year's Red Nose Day programming.
