The BBC has confirmed the return of its hit drama Vigil, with a gripping new mystery set to unfold in the third series. Produced by World Productions, the team behind successful dramas such as Line of Duty and Showtrial, Vigil will see DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) and DI Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) tackle their most high-stakes case yet. The new series is set to begin filming in Scotland later this year, and promises a thrilling combination of murder mystery, action, and political intrigue.
The third series takes the detectives to a remote Arctic research station, where a member of a covert British special forces mission has been shot dead. With international tensions rising due to a land-grab for energy resources in the polar regions, Amy and Kirsten must race against time to catch the killer and prevent a global crisis. As both their careers and their personal relationship come under intense pressure, the stakes have never been higher. The chilling backdrop of the Arctic and the complex political landscape make this an even more dangerous mission for the duo, who will need all their skill and determination to crack the case.
Vigil premiered in 2021 and quickly became one of the UK's most successful dramas of the decade. The series, which was nominated for Best Drama Series at the 2022 BAFTA Television Awards, won the International Emmy for Best Drama Series and has garnered a devoted fanbase. The second series, which aired in 2023 and revolved around a deadly drone attack, launched to nearly nine million viewers, solidifying its place as one of the BBC's top dramas of the year.
Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie have both expressed their excitement about returning to the series. Jones, who plays the resolute DCI Amy Silva, said, "I can't wait to return to Vigil series three, see our brilliant team in Scotland, and work with Rose again. I'm sure it will be a thrill of a ride." Leslie, who portrays DI Kirsten Longacre, added, "I can't wait to get stuck into another season of Vigil, to work with the wonderful Suranne Jones again and our brilliant crew. This time, Kirsten will get to pack her bags and join Amy on what's set to be Vigil's most high-stakes mission yet!"
Writer Tom Edge, who created and penned the series, shared his excitement about the new season, saying, "In our third season, we travel to the frozen north where the world's great powers are competing to secure advantages as the ice melts. With a brilliant cast and crew assembling to make the show, we hope to deliver an epic investigation that shines a light on issues that will shape the world we all live in." Executive producer Jake Lushington echoed this enthusiasm, noting that Vigil's combination of murder mystery, action, and political thriller has captivated audiences, with the chemistry between Jones and Leslie being a key part of its success.
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, highlighted the success of the first two series and expressed her excitement about the upcoming season. "After the barnstorming success of Vigil series one and two, it's our pleasure to announce the return of Silva and Longacre for what promises to be their most adrenaline-fuelled mission yet. Tom Edge and the World Productions team have excelled themselves with a brand-new mystery and setting that will give Vigil's millions of fans even more of the brilliant, blockbuster drama they've come to expect and love from this very special show."
Vigil series three will consist of six 60-minute episodes, and will be produced by World Productions in association with ITV Studios for the BBC. The producer is Marcus Wilson, and the executive producers are Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, and Tom Edge. The series will be distributed internationally by ITV Studios. Fans of the drama can look forward to the latest chapter of Amy and Kirsten's thrilling investigation when Vigil returns to BBC One and iPlayer.
