BBC Scotland has commissioned Firecrest Films to produce The Hunt for Peter Tobin, a gripping new two-part documentary that delves into the crimes of one of Scotland's most notorious serial killers. Set to air in March 2025 on BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer, the series is the latest instalment in the award-winning The Hunt for… strand following the success of The Hunt for Bible John and The Hunt for the World's End Killers.
The documentary traces the long and complex investigations that ultimately exposed Tobin as a predator who operated across the UK for more than three decades. It focuses on three key cases. Fifteen-year-old Vicky Hamilton disappeared from a bus stop in 1991. Eighteen-year-old Dinah McNicol vanished after hitchhiking home from a music festival the same year. Then in 2006, twenty-three-year-old Angelika Kluk went missing in Glasgow. What began as separate missing persons cases gradually led to the shocking realisation that a serial killer had been preying on young women for years.
Beyond the police investigations, The Hunt for Peter Tobin examines the emotional toll of these disappearances on the families and friends left behind. Through interviews with loved ones, detectives, forensic scientists and journalists, the series paints a harrowing picture of the relentless pursuit of justice.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Matt Pinder and edited by Audrey McColligan and Dave Clark, the series aims to deliver the same powerful storytelling that made its predecessors so compelling. David Harron, Commissioning Executive for BBC Scotland, highlights the documentary's blend of investigative depth and human storytelling, ensuring a deeply moving and thought-provoking viewing experience. Firecrest Films' Head of Documentaries, Mick McAvoy, emphasises the series' tribute to the resilience of victims' families and the tireless efforts of police and charities in uncovering the truth.
With its meticulous research, emotional weight and expert storytelling, The Hunt for Peter Tobin is set to be another unmissable addition to BBC Scotland's true crime slate.
