Few figures in modern history embody heroism as completely as Christopher Reeve. While millions admired him as Superman on screen, it was his extraordinary resilience and activism following a life-altering accident that cemented his legacy as a true symbol of hope. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story dives deep into the remarkable life of this iconic actor, activist, filmmaker, and devoted family man, revealing a tale of triumph, love, and unrelenting perseverance.
This poignant documentary chronicles both Reeve's glittering Hollywood career and his life after the 1995 horseback riding accident that left him paralysed from the neck down. Drawing on Reeve's own words, as well as intimate interviews with his children, close friends, and family, the film offers a layered portrait of a man who refused to be defined by his physical limitations. Instead, he embraced his circumstances, transforming tragedy into purpose and inspiring millions in the process.
After becoming a quadriplegic, Reeve channelled his fame into advocacy, founding the Christopher Reeve Foundation to fund groundbreaking research on spinal cord injuries and improve the lives of disabled people worldwide. His advocacy was marked by unwavering optimism, unyielding determination, and a charisma that drew people to his cause. He continued to work in film as an actor and director while prioritising his family, including his wife, Dana Reeve, who became his steadfast partner and caregiver. Together, they were a beacon of love and mutual support, demonstrating the profound strength of their bond.
The documentary also explores Dana's heroic efforts to support Christopher and carry forward his mission after his death at age 52. Tragically, Dana passed away from lung cancer just 17 months later, yet her enduring commitment to advocacy lives on through the renamed Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.
Richly illustrated with clips from Reeve's career, including his iconic turn as Superman, the film features never-before-seen home movies and personal archive material. Through exclusive interviews with Reeve's children, Matthew Reeve, Alexandra Reeve Givens, and Will Reeve, the documentary paints a deeply personal picture of their father. Insight from friends like Susan Sarandon, Glenn Close, and his Juilliard classmate Robin Williams adds further depth, alongside reflections from family members and colleagues.
Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, with a score by Ilan Eshkeri, the film captures the essence of Reeve's life: his courage, his humanity, and his unshakable belief in the power of hope. Archival footage of his close relationship with Robin Williams, including their moments of laughter and support, underscores the joy and strength Reeve drew from his friendships.
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is more than a biography; it is a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit. It portrays Christopher Reeve not only as the superhero who soared across cinema screens but also as a man who defied every obstacle to become a real-life inspiration. His legacy continues to shine as a beacon of hope, love, and determination for those who face the toughest challenges, and for anyone who dares to dream of a better world.
