This November, BBC Scotland introduces Only Child, a new comedy series featuring Gregor Fisher and Greg McHugh as the father-and-son duo Ken and Richard Pritchard. Set in the quiet town of Forres in the Scottish Highlands, the series explores the bonds and tensions between generations through Richard's reluctant return home to check on his father. Richard, a bit-part actor from London, originally intends for his visit to be brief, but he quickly realizes that his father may need more help than expected.
Ken, played by Fisher, is an eccentric, technophobic widower who resists change at every turn. His old-fashioned, stubborn ways often clash with Richard's more modern outlook and technology-reliant habits, creating a comedic tension that brings both warmth and humor to the show. The dynamics between the two highlight the struggles that many people face with aging parents who are independent yet increasingly in need of support.
Adding depth to the series is a talented cast of Scottish and Irish actors, including Amy Lennox as Emily, a neighbor whose interactions with Ken and Richard reveal even more about their generational divide. Stuart Bowman, Clare Barrett, Robin Laing, and Paul Rattray further enrich the storyline by portraying the colorful community of Forres that Richard finds himself navigating. Jennifer Saunders lends her voice as Richard's acting agent, Sally, whose blunt advice and cutting humor add a layer of absurdity to Richard's predicament.
Supported by Screen Scotland and produced by Happy Tramp North for BBC Scotland and BBC One, Only Child offers a lighthearted yet poignant look at family relationships and the challenges of returning home. The series debuts on BBC Scotland on Thursday, November 21, with a follow-up airing on BBC One the next day. For those eager to binge the entire season, all six episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer starting November 21.
Only Child promises to be a relatable and charming addition to Scottish television, with Fisher and McHugh bringing warmth, wit, and a unique chemistry to their roles. Through humorous banter and heartfelt exchanges, the show captures both the frustrations and comforts of family life, with all its quirks and complexities.
