Zombies on the loose, flesh-eating chefs, and one seriously spooked mum – that's the plot of Channel 4.0's latest prank documentary, starring reality TV favourite Chloe Burrows as she pulls off the ultimate scare on her own mum, Louisa. The show's a cheeky digital short that's been whipped up to get fans buzzing for Ben Wheatley's new zombie series, Generation Z, and it doesn't disappoint.
The idea? Convince Louisa that the undead walk among us, in a "documentary" exposing a new craze for human flesh. Chloe's in on it, of course, teaming up with YouTube's king of pranks, Archie Manners, to deliver a wild ride that leaves her poor mum bewildered, horrified, and eventually – relieved it was all just a joke!
With an army of actors playing everything from undead chefs to zombie enthusiasts, the fake doc shows Louisa slowly starting to buy into the idea that people might actually be chowing down on… other people. There's even a chef on set specialising in "human flesh" cuisine, hoping to push her to the point of no return – but will Chloe really get her mum to take a bite?
"It was tough to keep the joke going, especially when I could see my mum's reactions," Chloe said. "But honestly, her relief at the end was the funniest part. Sorry, Mum!"
The prank didn't just get Louisa – it's already got fans laughing, and Channel 4's Cat White, Digital Commissioning Executive, is thrilled with the results. "Working with 4Creative is always fun, but throw zombies into the mix, and it's a whole new level of brilliant. Archie's plan was totally bonkers, and Chloe's YouTube-style caper was spot-on," White commented, adding that Louisa's apparently forgiven the crew. Lucky for them!
This 23-minute digital special, produced by Acclaimed Content and executive-produced by Anton Inwood and Archie Manners, was commissioned for Channel 4.0 by White and Evie Buckley. It's perfectly timed to drop alongside Generation Z, the darkly comic zombie series that promises to deliver something a bit different from your typical apocalypse.
Set in the sleepy fictional town of Dambury, Generation Z starts with an army convoy flipping over near a care home. A mysterious chemical leak then leaves its mark on the residents – and let's just say their taste in food takes a turn for the creepy. The OAPs, now ravenous and out for blood, are on a rampage led by the unlikely duo of Cecily and Frank, all while the army tries to keep their zombie outbreak under wraps.
Catch Generation Z when it premieres on Channel 4 on Sunday 27th October at 9pm, and binge the whole series on All4 from the same night. Then, for a bit of extra Halloween fun, don't miss the prank doc starring Chloe Burrows, which goes live on Channel 4.0's YouTube channel on Monday 28th October at 6pm.
