The BBC, in partnership with multi-Oscar-nominated producers Magic Light Pictures, has unveiled the first look at their highly anticipated Christmas animated special Tiddler, an enchanting tale of a little fish with a big imagination. Adapted from the beloved picture book by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, Tiddler continues the successful collaboration between the creators and the BBC, marking their 12th animated adaptation.
Tiddler follows the adventures of a tiny fish who often gets lost in his own imaginative stories, only to find himself actually lost in the vast ocean. Through his creativity and storytelling, Tiddler ultimately saves himself in this heartwarming underwater adventure.
Leading the star-studded voice cast is Emmy Award winner Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso, Game of Thrones), who narrates the film. Waddingham expressed her excitement, saying, "The books and films of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler have been the cornerstone of my daughter's life and mine. They beautifully teach children to embrace their uniqueness, which is a joyful message."
The half-hour special boasts a strong ensemble cast, with Lolly Adefope (Ghosts) voicing Miss Skate, Jayde Adams (Alma's Not Normal) as Plaice, and Rob Brydon returning for his twelfth Donaldson-Scheffler adaptation, lending his voice to multiple characters, including Fisherman, Whale, and Starfish. Reuben Kirby voices Tiddler, while Theo Fraser portrays Johnny Dory.
Following the success of last year's Tabby McTat, which garnered 8.6 million viewers, Tiddler promises to capture the magic once again for family audiences this festive season.
Directed by Andy Martin and Alex Bain, written by Michael Bohnenstingl, and produced by Barney Goodland and Martin Pope, Tiddler will debut on BBC iPlayer and BBC One this Christmas. Commissioned by BBC's Charlotte Moore and Nawfal Faizullah, the special is set to be a holiday highlight, blending Donaldson and Scheffler's timeless charm with world-class animation.
