The BBC has officially acquired Lynley, a highly anticipated modern reboot of the popular crime series based on Elizabeth George's best-selling novels. The four-part series, starring Leo Suter (Vikings: Valhalla) and Sofia Barclay (Ted Lasso), will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, bringing the iconic detective duo of DI Tommy Lynley and DS Barbara Havers back to television screens.

Currently filming in Ireland, the new adaptation promises to deliver fresh intrigue with its contemporary take on George's beloved characters. The series, produced by Playground, the team behind Wolf Hall and All Creatures Great and Small, was originally commissioned by BritBox US in collaboration with the BBC.

A New Spin on a Classic Crime Partnership
Lynley follows the complex relationship between Detective Inspector Tommy Lynley, played by Leo Suter, and Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, portrayed by Sofia Barclay. Lynley, a brilliant detective, finds himself alienated from his peers due to his aristocratic background. In contrast, Havers is a maverick with a working-class background and an unconventional approach to policing. Despite their stark differences, the two detectives forge an unlikely but formidable partnership, united by their shared dedication to uncovering the truth and delivering justice.

Alongside the lead duo, the cast also includes Daniel Mays (Magpie Murders) as DCI Brian Nies, the shrewd and insecure senior detective who harbors resentment towards Lynley. Niamh Walsh (The English Game) stars as Helen Clyde, a former Oxford classmate and romantic interest of Lynley. Michael Workeye (My Lady Jane) plays tech expert Tony Bekele, while Joshua Sher (Vera) portrays Simon St. James, a forensic scientist integral to the investigative team.

Behind the Scenes of Lynley
The new series promises to be a fresh and engaging interpretation of Elizabeth George's novels, blending contemporary storytelling with the timeless themes of class conflict, justice, and moral complexity. Executive Producer and writer Steve Thompson, known for his work on Vienna Blood and Sherlock, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: "It's a privilege and a thrill to have the opportunity to adapt these wonderful books for television. Elizabeth George's iconic characters are greatly loved, and her gripping stories are smart and ingenious."

Elizabeth George herself shared her excitement: "I'm thrilled to see Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers come to television again, especially through the participation of the BBC and BritBox and the production expertise of Playground. Watching my characters brought to life on television is a real celebration."

Building on a Legacy
This adaptation of Lynley will be a fresh introduction for new audiences while also serving as a welcome return for fans of both George's novels and the BBC's earlier adaptation, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries. Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, remarked, "There is so much to enjoy in this new and exciting adaptation, both for fans of Elizabeth George's gripping novels and of the BBC's iconic The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, and for viewers yet to encounter the magnetic attraction of Lynley."

The production boasts a strong creative team. Ed Bazalgette (Marie Antoinette S2, The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die) serves as lead director, while Suzanne McAuley (Magpie Murders, Love/Hate) takes on the role of series producer. The series is executive produced by Steve Thompson, David Stern, and Colin Callender for Playground, alongside representatives from BritBox, BBC Studios, and the BBC.

A Must-Watch for Crime Drama Fans
With its captivating characters, strong cast, and the expertise of a talented production team, Lynley is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated crime dramas of the year. Fans of Elizabeth George's novels and lovers of mystery alike will be eager to see this compelling story unfold when it premieres on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Lynley (4x90') will also be distributed internationally by BBC Studios, ensuring that audiences worldwide can join in the suspense and drama of this exciting new series.
