Following the unprecedented success of the 2023 Taiwanese box office sensation Marry My Dead Body, fans of the beloved film can rejoice as the adventures of the quirky police squad continue with the highly anticipated spin-off series GG Precinct. Premiering on August 22 exclusively on Netflix, the new series promises to deliver a captivating blend of irreverent humor and suspenseful murder mystery across six exhilarating episodes.
Directed by the acclaimed creators Cheng Wei-hao and Yin Chen-hao, GG Precinct extends the narrative of Marry My Dead Body, which captivated audiences with its unique combination of comedy and crime drama. Cheng Wei-hao, who helmed the original film, joins forces with Yin Chen-hao, known for his work on Man in Love, to bring fresh yet familiar faces back to the screen.
The series picks up where the film left off, reuniting viewers with the charismatic and unfiltered detective Wu Ming-han, portrayed once again by the talented Hsu Kuang-han. After helping his ghost husband Mao Mao find closure in the film, Wu Ming-han, along with his loyal and often humorous sidekick Chubby, played by Flower Chen, returns to the precinct for new, thrilling cases. Wu Ming-han's boss, Chang Yung-kang, played by Ma Nien-hsien, has been promoted to precinct chief, setting the stage for a new dynamic within the squad.
Reflecting on his return to the role, Hsu Kuang-han shares, "While this is a spin-off series of the film, it felt more like a class reunion. It's great to be able to get together again, and the sense of camaraderie felt a lot stronger." This sentiment echoes the excitement among the cast and crew, who have reunited to explore new storylines and deepen the bonds between their characters.
Gingle Wang also makes a return to the series as Lin Tzu-ching, a fellow police officer whose previous betrayal as a mole for a mobster was a significant plot point in Marry My Dead Body. Tzu-ching's return to the precinct, now as the squad leader, brings a new layer to her character's journey. "While Tzu-ching may have been a snitch who betrayed the squad in Marry My Dead Body, it was done to avenge her mother who was wrongfully killed by drug abusers. Tzu-ching is glad to be back at the precinct, and is thankful for the warm welcome from her fellow squadmates," Wang reveals, hinting at the complex character dynamics explored in the new series.
Producer Jin Pai-lunn offers insight into the genesis of GG Precinct, explaining, "While filming Marry My Dead Body, we could already sense the great chemistry among the group of quirky cops. It was particularly interesting to see the sparks between the squadmates as they investigated each case relentlessly, despite not being the most adequate in doing so. We immediately decided to expand the universe of Marry My Dead Body, and were fortunate enough to begin shooting with the crew even before we started promoting the film."
As a genre-blending crime comedy series, GG Precinct stands out for its unique approach, combining the intense thrills of a murder mystery with the offbeat humor that made the original film a hit. The series not only continues the story from Marry My Dead Body but also deepens the world-building that has captured the imagination of viewers.
With the original film also serving as Taiwan's official selection for the 2024 Academy Awards, the arrival of GG Precinct is highly anticipated by fans eager for more of the charmingly unconventional detectives and their exciting escapades.
Fans can catch all the action, mystery, and laughter of GG Precinct starting August 22, exclusively on Netflix. Don't miss the chance to follow the motley crew of detectives as they dive into new, mind-boggling investigations with their signature blend of humor and heart.
