The South Bank Show Revisited season opens with Melvyn Bragg interviewing Andrew Lloyd Webber on Sunday 28 March 2010 on ITV1.
Melvyn Bragg says: “Last autumn Peter Fincham commissioned 10 final South Bank Show programmes which we’ve called South Bank Show Revisited. We’ll be going back to some of the artists we’ve worked with over the years and referring to those earlier films and re interviewing them about their current work. I hope that by looking at past work over 30 years and talking about where they are today, the artists will give us a unique perspective on their process and progress over several decades.”
Melvyn Bragg’s first programme in the series is with Andrew Lloyd Webber as he prepares for the opening of Love Never Dies at the Adelphi Theatre. Love Never Dies continues the story of ‘The Phantom’, who has moved from his lair in the Paris Opera House to haunt the fairgrounds of Coney Island.
Over the years The South Bank Show has interviewed Andrew Lloyd Webber four times: in 1978 on Variations - which is also the theme music for The South Bank Show; in 1986 focusing on The Phantom Of The Opera; in 2000 looking at his work The Beautiful Game; and in 2003 discussing his love of art and his remarkable art collection, particularly his Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite works.
Meeting at The Adelphi Theatre, this film uses archive from the original South Bank Shows; and Melvyn and Andrew bring the world of his musicals up to date – and discuss his recent and highly successful foray into television talent shows.
