The BBC and Fable Pictures have unveiled new images from "Mr Loverman," an eagerly anticipated eight-part drama series based on Bernardine Evaristo's acclaimed 2013 novel. Set to premiere this autumn on BBC iPlayer and BBC One, the series promises to bring a rich, vibrant portrayal of Britain's Caribbean community to the screen.
The newly released pictures feature Lennie James, known for his roles in "Save Me" and "Line of Duty," as Barrington Jedidiah Walker, the charismatic and stylish protagonist. James' portrayal brings to life Barrington, a 74-year-old Antiguan-born resident of Hackney, whose life is as lively and colourful as his retro suits. Joining him is Sharon D Clarke, a three-time Olivier Award winner, as Carmel Walker, Barrington's wife of fifty years. Clarke's portrayal of Carmel adds depth to the narrative, capturing the complexity of a woman who suspects her husband of infidelity.
Ariyon Bakare, celebrated for his performances in "Life" and "His Dark Materials," plays Morris De La Roux, Barrington's best friend and secret lover. The dynamic between Bakare and James promises to be a central, emotionally charged element of the series. The cast is further strengthened by Tamara Lawrance and Sharlene Whyte, who portray Barrington and Carmel's daughters, Maxine and Donna, with Tahj Miles appearing as Daniel, Donna's son and the couple's grandson.
"Mr Loverman" explores the life of Barrington as he faces the twilight years of his life. His extramarital affair with Morris forces him to confront significant choices that will impact his entire family. The series delves into themes of love, identity, and the search for authenticity, reflecting Evaristo's groundbreaking exploration of the Caribbean diaspora in Britain.
The adaptation, written by Nathaniel Price, known for his work on "The Outlaws" and "Noughts + Crosses," and directed by Hong Khaou, who has previously worked on "Alice & Jack" and "Baptiste," promises a thoughtful and engaging portrayal of Evaristo's novel. Irma Inniss, the producer, and executive producers Faye Ward, Hannah Farrell, and Hannah Price for Fable Pictures, alongside Jo McClellan for the BBC, have ensured a high-quality production. Additional executive producers include Lennie James and Hong Khaou, with Nathaniel Price as associate producer.
"Mr Loverman" also features a notable supporting cast, including Suzette Llewellyn, Lochlann Ó Mearáin, Hopi Grace, Llewella Gideon, Doreene Blackstock, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Juliet Garricks, and Clint Dyer. Their involvement highlights the series' commitment to presenting a multifaceted view of its community.
Set to be distributed internationally by Sony Pictures Television, "Mr Loverman" is poised to be a significant addition to the BBC's programming this autumn, promising a captivating blend of drama, emotion, and cultural insight.
